About Question about government job locations

Question about government job locations?
I am an undergrad at University of Wisconsin Madison studying human development and family studies and after grad school i would like to get a job working for the government as either a social policiy analyst or a counselor. I want to stay in the midwest but with a government job would I be required to work in Madison, St. Paul, Des Moines, etc

Answer 1 :
If you are talking working for the Federal government, be advised you will find it VERY hard to get a policy analyst job anywhere but Washington DC. Almost all policy is drawn up and introduced in the main offices in DC - field offices are more designed to perform program work directly with clients. Similarly, I would assume that policy analyst for a state government will be in whatever the capital of the state is. As a counselor, you would probably have more options for location (this is all assuming anyone is hiring in these times).
Answer 2 :
Go to www.usajobs.gov, put "counselor" in the search field and hit enter. Then you can take a look at where jobs are available and what they are. Dave is correct about any policy analyst job being in Washington DC or vicinity, but various counselors are needed across the country. Be aware, though, that unless you are a veteran, your chances of getting a federal job are pretty slim unless you have a degree that few other people have, because they have preference.
